Soaking in the healing waters of a natural hot spring is one of the most effective ways to relax in nature, and British Columbia has no shortage of natural hot springs. Whether you're looking to experience a resort-like hot springs complex just off the highway, soak in an undeveloped pool in the woods, or unwind in the seclusion of a hot spring accessible only by water, BC is the place for you.
We asked our Facebook fans to name their favorite hot springs in BC, and here are their top five recommendations:
5. Harrison Hot Springs
Our fans' number five choice is Harrison Hot Springs, a popular resort town located a couple of hours east of Vancouver. The town sits on ultra scenic Harrison Lake, a large lake known for its water sports and mountain backdrop. The hot springs themselves can be accessed at the public pool, or at the Harrison Hot Springs Resort & Spa. The resort maintains several pools, some indoor and some outdoor, that are fed by the hot springs.
4. Halcyon Hot Springs
In at number four is pretty Halcyon Hot Springs, perched on the shores of the Arrow Lakes north of Nakusp. The springs' four pools are a unique combination of sodium, lithium, magnesium, calcium, and strontium, and vary in temperatures from hot pools at 41°C/107°F, warm pools at 35°C/95°F, and cooler/children's pools at 29°C/85°F. Halcyon Hot Springs Resort offers a number of accommodation options.
3. Ainsworth Hot Springs
Tied in the number two position is Ainsworth Hot Springs, set along the west shore of Kootenay Lake, against a backdrop of the Purcell Mountains. Ainsworth offers a unique experience for hot springs goers in that the natural mineral water flows from a horseshoe-shaped cave into pools below. Bathers can wade through this cave as mineral water falls from above, creating a natural steam bath. Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort is open year-round, offering great accommodation and fine dining.
2. Lussier Hot Springs
Also at number two is Lussier Hot Springs, located in Whiteswan Lake Provincial Park. These undeveloped hot springs provide soothing warmth in a wilderness setting alongside the Lussier River. A short hike from the Whiteswan Forestry Road takes you to three natural pools enclosed by boulders, with an average temperature of 44°C/111°F.
1. Liard River Hot Springs
And our fans' favorite place to relax in Mother Nature's hot tub is stunning Liard River Hot Springs, located off the Alaska Highway near the BC/Yukon border in Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park. These springs have created an unusually warm microclimate where tropical and exotic plants (including 14 species of orchids) flourish, and moose are frequent visitors. Follow the boardwalk to a rustic pool. Year-round, temperatures range from 42°C to 52°C (107°F to 125°F). Visit the hot springs in winter and relax in the steaming pool as the snow covers the trees.
